The Queen of My Dreams

Azra, a queer Pakistani woman living in Toronto, is worlds apart from her conservative Muslim mother. When her father suddenly dies, Azra finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories, both real and imagined, from her mother’s youth in Karachi to her own coming-of-age (and out) in rural Canada. Inspired by real events, Fawzia Mirza's vibrant and stylish film, uses a candy colored palette, to explore the chasm between individual desires and cultural expectations, fluidly slipping between the textures of Indian cinema and the concerns of a coming-of-age film. Infused with humor, romance, music, and fantasy, The Queen of My Dreams, explores the intergenerational ties between mothers and daughters, East and West, home and away.
